Sophia Valsamis
CityUniversity, Practicum Student Counsellor
Sophia is a practicum student supervised by Samantha Short, RCC & Clinic Director.
Sophia is currently in her final year of the Master of Education in School Counselling program at City University. She believes that counselling is built on trust, comfort, and growth, creating a space where clients feel safe to show up as they are and explore their own stories. Sophia approaches counselling with humility, curiosity, and a non-judgmental, collaborative mindset, recognizing that each person brings their own unique experiences, strengths, and perspectives. She believes that clients are the experts in their own lives and values working alongside them to support their growth, build self-understanding, and navigate life’s challenges at their own pace.
Her approach is grounded in working through a person-centered lens and informed by therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and narrative therapy. Sophia strives to create a neuroaffirming and inclusive space where clients feel understood, respected, and accepted for who they are.
Sophia holds a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Sciences from the University of British Columbia. Alongside her counselling studies, she works as a Behaviour Interventionist and Speech-Language Pathology Assistant, supporting children with diverse needs and helping them develop skills, build confidence, and navigate their everyday experiences. Her previous experience as a childcare leader further strengthened her passion for supporting children through the different stages of their development. These experiences continue to shape her commitment to creating meaningful connections and being a supportive presence in the lives of the individuals and families she works with.
Outside of her work and studies, Sophia enjoys discovering new music, spending quality time with friends, travelling, and trying new restaurants all over the city!.
